Proverbs - Chapter 28

How Does God Favor His Children? A verse-by-verse study on the 28th chapter of the Book of Proverbs.

The Book of Proverbs

Chapter 28

As a reminder, we are in the section of Proverbs where King Hezekiah added extra unpublished proverbs to what we know of as the Book of Proverbs.  Chapters 25-29 are those proverbs - so let's dive into chapter 28.

1  The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion.

When someone has done something wrong - wickedly wrong, they are always looking behind them to see who is chasing or following after them.  Their guilty conscience has brought to them to always have the fear of getting caught.  Thus, they become suspicious of everyone and will continually do whatever they have to do to keep themselves from having to suffer the consequences of their actions, which simply brings them in to more and more wickedness.

  • The righteous - those who follow after God can stand tall and not be afraid.  The do not have to continuously look backward to see if they are being pursued.
  • Even if a lion, so to speak, does pursues us, we again have that promise that God is with us, never leaving nor forsaking us.
  • God's favor is upon His people.
  • God blesses His people.
  • God gives His angels charge over us where we are held in the hands of His angels.
  • In addition, as New Covenant believers, we have the blood of Jesus to save, heal, protect and deliver us.
  • We have the indwelling Holy Spirit to guide and lead us.
  • We have the armor of God to fight off and fight against the forces of wickedness.
  • We can stand tall when we follow after the ways of the Lord.  These are shouting promises.  Thank you God!

2  Because of the transgression of a land, many are its princes; but by a man of understanding and knowledge
right will be prolonged.

To explain this scripture best, let me start out by using a corporation as an example.

  • As a small business grows, more employees will need to added to the staff.
  • As more staff is added, more leaders or managers will be needed as departments grow.
  • Then when it expands even more, a larger building is necessary.  Maybe even other plants added.

It keeps multiplying over time as the business prospers.

  • The more it grow, the more bylaws, policy and procedures need to be added to accommodate the growing needs of the company.
  • Everytime something negative happened within the corporation, another policy or procedues (law) will need to be put in place to keep everything above board for the company and for the employees.

Will everyone follow all the policies given out to the employees?  No, there will always be those who will push things to the edge or even violate the policies (laws) in place.

  • Will they get away with it?
  • Or will they be punished for their actions.
  • If not....Well, this is how corruption in a corporation begins

Now we can use these same principles in a church - a large growing church.  You can use it with our government.

  • The more people - the more rules need to be in place.
  • The more rules, only shows the necessity of needing to have them.
  • People are people, and there will always be those who violate those rules.

I learned this first hand when I ran the college.

  • Even though we were small, we were part of a large church.
  • Many rules had to be put in place because we were a growing mega-church, and the college was simply a department of the church....and there was most definitely those who would abuse the rules - not only in the church but in the college - a Christian college.
  • I set up bylaws, policies and procedures, obviously, to run a smooth college, but it, like any place else, was a fluctuation place because people were involved in it.
  • It seemed like I was writing additional policies and procedures continuously.  And then no sooner were these policies in places, then there would be those who would violate those new policies.
  • And it always seemed to be done by the same few people.
  • In the ten years that I ran the college, the names of the violators may have changed, but there was always a certain breed of people who would violate the laws and peace within the college.
  • While not recognizable at first, it didn't take long before their character began to show.
  • Remember, people are people, and in Christian settings it is no different.
  • If I had allowed these students the liberty of abusing our policies and procedures, they could have destroyed the college.

Now imagine this scenario with the government of our country.

  • We are huge - massive amounts of people.
  • We have a department for everything
  • We have rules or laws for every department - and people put in place to run those department.
  • But then there are always dishonest people who will abuse the laws in place...because people are people, and the devil is busy at work.
  • The bigger you get, the worse the problem.

Corruption begins, and before long the corruption grows, because the  leaders have become corrupt.  Pretty soon, you have a swamp of corruption - especially in the leadership, and where do you begin to get clean out the swamp.

  • It's going to take destruction or a complete makeover to fix the problem of a dirty huge swamp.
  • That is where our country is at right now.  Our land is trangressed, just as this verse speaks of.

God will bless a man of godly understanding and knowledge, if he is allowed to be put in charge of our land.

  • Our land will then be blessed because righteous has taken over.  While it may take time, we need godly leaders in our country to make it a godly nation again.

3  A poor man who oppresses the poor is like a driving rain which leaves no food.

You would think that a poor man would have sympathy on the other poor.  That, however, is normally not the case.  There are the poor who opress other poor.  They will steal from each other just to have another morsel of food, another drink, or a blanket to sleep with.

  • When people are hungry, cold, afraid, alone, and without hope, they will do anything to meet their basic needs of life.
  • So then we, who do have, and have it in abundance, we need to share with those who don't have.  Let the Lord direct you in this area.

4  Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, but such as keep the law contend with them.

When the fundamental rules of justice are forsaken, the wicked are happy because it benefits them.  These wicked get rich off of the people they are suppose to lead, and they gloat in the presence of any praise given to them by their deceptive measures.

  • The righteous, however, can see the heart of these wicked - I will say it -  politicians - that misuse or change the laws.  The righteous are sad because the populous of people will have to suffer and pay for the benefits of the wicked in power as they - we watch the deteriation of our country unfold before us.
  • For those brave ones who come against the wicked in our country, they need our prayers to overcome the evil in this country.

We must remember from Romans 13: 1-17 is that one reason God gives laws and government to men is to restrain and contend the wicked in power.  We must always obey God first.

  • That means we must hear from God in order to obey what He says.
  • We still have as our governing power the Constitution of the United States, which supports the Word of God.
    • All government official under our Constitution have taken an oath to honor and submit to our Constitution - not look for ways to work around it to support their wickedness.
    • So then, we must obey God first, and then the laws of the land - meaning the Constitution of the United States.
    • We must always obey God over anything that man can divise as his law.

5  Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the Lord understand all.

Evil people have been blinded and their conscience has become hardened to righteousness.  As such, they live by their own passions and desires and under the control of Satan.

  • While there are the fundamentally evil or wicked people, having a seared conscience, we must always remember that anything that goes contrary to the will of God, God considers wicked or evil.
  • That means even Christians can do evil things because they are either blind to God's truth in that area, or they are being rebellious to something they know violates God's will.
  • So then, both unbelievers and unbelievers can do evil or wicked things in the eyes of God.

The righteous - those following the wisdom and will of God - have the instinctive knowledge because they are always in tune with the indwelling Holy Spirit.

  • They know and understand what is going on, being fully aware of the evil.
  • Not only do they fear the Lord with an awesome reverence, they have renewed their minds to the Word and will of God.  As such, they walk in God's wisdom.

6  Better is the poor who walks in his integrity than one perverse in his ways, though he be rich.

If given the choice, would you rather be righteous and poor, walking in the integrity and ways of the Lord, trusting Him to take care of you - and end up in heaven as your eternal resting place or...

  • Would you prefer to be rich and evil minded, living on your own strength, and having to suffer the internal grief of being away from your Creator, and ultimately knowing you will have to face God in your eternal judgment, which only brings on hell and the eternal Lake of Fire?

I'm sure we will all choose to be poor with God than rich without Him.

7  Whoever keeps the law is a discerning son, but a companion of gluttons shames his father.

Our Bibles tell us that we shall know others by the fruit in their life.  The fruit of what we believe, what we say and do, and the character of who we are in our hearts are displayed by the fruit of our life.

  • If our fruit goes contrary to what the Word of God teaches us, then we need to examine our hearts to see where we have missed the mark and purpose to change with the help of God to be that obedient person to the things of God.

So then, who is a companion of gluttons?

Glutton means given to one's appetites - done in excess.  It is far more than food.  It could be food, but it could also be alcohol, gambling, as well as excess passion for social media, and anything else that is done in excess, taking away from our relationship with God.

  • One who has been given over to, or even a companion of anyone who abuses his appetites by various vices is an embarrassment to his family.
  • Chances are, the gluttonous person is making a fool of himself while he is practicing his vice.

8  One who increases his possessions by usury and extortion gathers it for him who will pity the poor.

There are some who become rich through extortion where they cheat and steal from the vulnerable or excessive lending, charging high and unfair interest rates, attempting to convince the people they are running a fair and honest business.

  • God, however, will not allow these evil people to continue in their deception.  God will not only judge them, but their wealth will eventually end up in the hands the hands of the righteous.
  • Proverbs 13: 22 tells us that the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous.
  • Money comes and money goes.  Yes, there are the wealthy, filthy wealthy out there, as well as the poor among us. But, again, the rich cannot take their wealth with them.  Somehow, God will use that money to support His Kingdom.

9  One who turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an abomination.

God's Word is Truth - God's truth for us.  As we grow in the Lord, our hunger for Him should grow as well.  If it doesn't, then we need to examine our heart.  God wants us to always have an open and attentive ear toward listening or meditating on His Word.

  • To not then have that hunger, means we are in a spiritual back sliding state with the Lord, and we need to change.  Our hearts will begin to harden and the Lord will begin to take a back place in our lives.  That certainly is not the will of God for us.

God is revealing to us here that when we fall back on our relationship with Him, even our prayers become null and void.  Will God listen and hear our prayers that we submit to Him?  He says here that even our prayers will be an abomination to Him.

  • Ouch, that one hurt.
  • In a back slidden state, can we pray the will of God before we would repent?
  • Or is our prayers full of ourselves - selfish and not according to God's will?

How to avoid all that?  Just keep on with the Lord - don't stray away.  It's dangerous out there - outside of the path on which God placed you on.

10  Whoever causes the upright to go astray in an evil way, he himself will fall into his own pit; but the blameless will inherit good.

Sadly, there are enough evil people in the world who enjoy watching the godly fall.  It makes them feel better when someone good has fallen because it makes them look better.

  • But beware, just like Hamen in the Book of Esther, he built a gallows for Mordecai to hang on, but in the end,  Hamen was found out, and he was the one who hung on the same gallows that he build for Mordecai.

God has a way of protecting His people.  Again, the sowing and reaping process is in effect in the earth.  God knows how to put the wicked in their place and then lift up His own so that God will receive the glory.  God will always have the final word.

11  The rich man is wise in his own eyes, but the poor who has understanding searches him out.

Not every wealthy person has gained his wealth through the wisdom of God.   There are a lot of rich people who walk in pride and arrogance, thinking themselves above others, and that they are the ones who are wise and those beneath them are the foolish.  They, however, are the fool because wealth comes and goes, pride comes before the fall, and when we lack in humility, we will be humbled.

  • True or godly wisdom comes from God to those who search it out.
  • Again, the beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord.
  • Then comes knowledge by renewing our minds to the Word of God.
  • Then we purpose to understand God's knowledge by meditating on it day and night.
  • When we have understood God's knowledge and apply it to our lives, then we can walk in the wisdom of God.
  • No shortcuts - just good ole honest Bible study and prayer day in and day out of our lives.

Those then who walk in the wisdom of God, whether poor or otherwise, can see right through this pompous rich man.

  • He sees his deceptiveness, his pride and foolishness.  He sees him for who he really is!
  • The poor godly man knows he is in a much better place than the rich man.
  • Riches do not make the man.  Godly wisdom and good character, however, does!

12  When the righteous rejoice, there is great glory; but when the wicked arise, men hide themselves.

It is only natural that when there is peace and prosperity in the land, the people rejoice and are happy.

  • When the righteous rejoice, living in peace and prosperity, God receives the glory.  The conditions among the people are at its best, and the people are happy.

When the wicked arise, people become afraid and hide.  They don't want to be ruled by wickedness because their freedom is now at stake, their surroundings may become dangerous, and they will lose the benefits of living in peace.

13  He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.

We live in a sinful world with mankind having a sinful nature.  Our conscience has made us ashamed of our sin, but we still do not want others to see our sins.  We have become really good at hiding our sins.  We can lie, shut our mouth, avoid the subject, or do a myriad of other things to avoid exposing our sin.  Then we wonder why things arn't going right in our life.

  • Somehow we think that if we avoid it, pretend it never happened, even God doesn't know.  He is the One person whom we cannot hide our sin.

Hiding our sin prevents us from being honest with ourselves, with God, which only hampers our relationship with him, and often hampers our relationships with others.

We all sin - because we were born with a sin nature.

1 John 1:8 tells us that if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

  • To say we never sin is a down and outright lie.

Then let's look at two verses down 1 John 1: 10  If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him (meaning God) a liar, and His Word is not in us.

  • So then to hide sin is futile.  We may deceive others around us, but we will never deceive God.
  • Oh, we may think, it is just a little bitty sin, and God won't mind.  But, oh yes, He does.  Remember, anything that is done or said contrary to the will of God, God considers evil and wicked.
  • Sin is sin - in the eyes of God, and in order to be clean before God, we have to confess it for what it really is - sin!

Now let's look at the remedy - in the verse in between.

1 John 1:9  If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

By confessing your sin, you are agreeing with God that it is a sin, and that you have violated His will.

  • You must have a repentant heart, meaning your confession is geniune from your heart, and you purpose not to do that sin again, with the help of God.
  • It must be sincere, because God certainly knows the intentions of your heart.

Now think about this, when you confess sin for what it is to God, being repentant, see that sin being removed from God's Book of Remembrance.  Because of Jesus' blood shed for you, your honest confession is now wiping that sin completely off of the books, never to be remembered again.

  • You have been forgiven, so now forgive yourself, and go and serve the Lord joyfully, knowing that that sin is no longer a part of your life.
  • He is so gracious to forgive, and put us back into his favor.

Proverbs 28: 14 Happy is the man who is always reverent, but he who hardens his heart will fall into calamity.

Happiness is based on present circumstances, while joy comes from within.  I looked up the word "happy" in this context in the original Greek, and it used the word "blessed" for the word happy.  The NIV uses the word "blessed" as well.   While the word "happy" and "reverent" are not often used together, the words "blessed" and "reverent" are.

  • Even in times of trouble, the blessed heart bases his feelings not on emotions, but the inner knowledge and assurance of a soul who is blessed because of the Lord.
  • Hopefully, what you have learned throughout Proverbs is that God loves us He will never leave us nor forsake us, He has our back, and He favors His children.  By acknowledging Him in all our ways, He directs our path, so why would we fret, because God is right with us each step of the way.  Not only do we love Him back, we purpose to give Him the reverence He most assuredly desires.

We have also learned that a hardened heart is one who refuses God's love and protection; thus, he cannot give God His rightful-due reverence and respect and God cannot protect him from the wiles of the enemy whose full plan is to rob, kill, and destroy.  As such, the hardened heart has set himself up for one fall after another.  His final fall will be his final judgment by God at the Great White Throne Judgment.

15 Like a roaring lion and a charging bear is a wicked ruler over poor people.  16 A ruler who lacks understanding is a great oppressor but he who hates covetousness will prolong his days.

King Solomon is using the picture of a roaring lion and a hungry charging bear to show us how a wicked ruler can operate.  He treats those of whom he considers useless with uncontrollable anger, tantalizing them like a roaring lion and a charging bear, leaving the one standing in front of the king fearful and powerless.  He will keep oppressing the people as long as his wickedness prevails.  This king of wicked king lacks understanding and will continue to oppress the people.

  • If the ruler, however, hates covenousness, he not only be wise in certain areas, which can prolong his life.

17 A man burdened with bloodshed will flee into a pit; let no one help him.

Once a person has bloodshed on his hands, he knows he is guilty of purposely harming or killing someone. He has now set himself up for his own curses to fall upon him with the sowing and reaping principle, along with a guilty conscience, no matter how hardened it has become.  It tells us here that we are not to help such a person.

18 Whoever walks blamelessly will be saved, but he who is perverse in his ways will suddenly fall.

We certainly cannot expect God to protect and bless us when we are doing something perverse in His eyes.  So it is telling us here that when we walk blameless before God, we will be saved, or rescued, whereas a person who is wicked or perverse may be fine for a while; however, a time will come when he will fall.

19 He who tills his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows frivolity will have poverty enough!

Here again we have the comparison of a lazy and diligent person.  A farmer who plants, waters, and tills his soil will have the rewards of his harvest.  He will be blessed.  On the other hand, the lazy person won't work the soil, and follows after a good time, will end up in his own poverty.   He brought about his own poverty due to his laziness.

20 A faithful man will abound with blessings, but he who hastens to be rich will not go unpunished.

A faithful person, one who is faithful to His job, his place in society, and faithful to the Lord will, as a general rule, receive many blessings because of his faithfulness.  As one of the fruits of the Spirit, faithfulness shows up in his diligence, honesty, and as a prudent person, he will remain faithful at whatever he does.

  • One who hastens to get rich quick can have many consequences if his heart is in the wrong place.  Gambling for instance:  There is so many people who go to casinos or Las Vegas hoping to make it big.  Gambling casinos don't offer free meals, free airfare or hotels because they are generous people.  They do it because they know they will receive far more back than the investment of offering something free.  They prey on those who think they can make it big and win lots of money.  For some, however, that is the beginning of the mindset of trying to get rich quick and the gambling fever has taken over their life.  I thing we all know people like this..
  • however, generally will do almost anything to get riches fast, showing his heart to be dishonest.  His greed will probably be done by dishonest means, cheating and taking advantage of others, and his own greed will bring him down to where his heart will be exposes to those around.
  • If not repentent, this kind of person will also have to face God for his greed, and his judgment can be in this life and in the life to come.

21 To show partiality is not good, because for a piece of bread a man will transgress.

God created His most beautiful creation in man with love and wanting the best for each person.  As many verses in Scripture tell us, there is no partiality toward anyone in Him (Rom 2:11).  He loves everyone equally.

Even in a court of law, where everyone should be treated as equal, as the Word of God claims, as well as our 1st amendment to the Constitution, judges can be bribed, and false witnesses can come forth - all for the price of money or power, or even something so evil as threats of death if a witness spoke truth.

  • Sadly, God's creation does not look at others like God does.  Mankind condemns in his heart others based on the color of their skin, their ethnicity, whether they are rich or poor, their nationality, religion, or their place in society.  If someone is different from them, they are prejudice toward them.

This is where each one of us needs to examine our own heart.  Think of each one of these categories.  Do you, do I internally judge someone over the color of his or her skin?  What about someone from another country, or the poor - especially down on skid row.  Here's one for us Christians - how about someone who is of another religion - one you know is wrong.  We've gotten so bad to where we can even say - someone of another denomination?

  • This is serious.  If we are going to see others as God sees them, we must reach out to those God places in our path as one of God's beautiful creation.
  • This is why Jesus told His disciples, which that means you and me - to go into all the world and witness the Gospel to ALL creation.  That means the poor from other countries, people of other religions, people of different color of skin - and treat them just as God would treat them - with love and concern for their welfare - and of all their eternal destiny.
  • You see, God so desires that all men be saved and come to the knowledge of truth.  (1 Tim 2:3-4)
  • The fast we get that truth into us, the less prejudice we will become, and the more loving we will be toward others who are different than us.

22 A man with an evil eye hastens after riches, and does not consider that poverty will come upon him.

Whether rich or poor, one who has evil in his heart runs after riches.  The rich to get richer, along with fear of it being taken away, and the poor want riches, but are often in a position of not receiving it because of his lot in life, drunkenness or laziness.  Money is such a motivator that it will bring man to do just about anything to acquire it.

  • Money, however, comes and goes.  We must always remember that God's blessings do not rest on those who chase after money, neglect giving to the poor, or has evil in his heart.
  • So then, if you have any sort of evil in your heart, God simply releases his hand of protection upon you, placing you on your own in your endeavors.
  • Man without God can never accomplish what man with God can do.  In other words, God is the source of all our blessings.

23 He who rebukes a man will find more favor afterward than he who flatters with the tongue.

One who is operating in the wisdom of God waits upon the Lord to move when God says to move and say what God tells him to say.  When it comes to confrontation, which sometimes is necessary, it is not an easy thing to do.  It should be done privately as not to embarrass the person or cause disruption with the people around.

  • Better is one who is willing to confront when something is wrong than someone who keeps flattering only to gain favor with the person they are flattering.  One is willing to be honest with hopes of restoring unity, and the other is looking for praise and more interested in looking good regardless of bad a situation gets.

24 Whoever robs his father or his mother, and says, “It is no transgression,” the same is companion to a destroyer.

The Bible tells us in the Old and New Testament to honor our father and mother.  First of all, to steal from them is dishonoring, and to think you have done nothing wrong is evil in the eyes of God, and your heart gives you away as one who has no respect for your parents.  Those kind of people are frowned upon.

  • Yes, there are people who gives excuses on how evil their parents were, and that may be true, but we must never forget they gave us life.  In that they need to be respected.  Forgiveness must come in order for the relationship to be restored, and we must still honor them because they are our parents.

Who is behind these kind of evil deeds?  Satan, of course, and none of us wants to be partners with Satan and his evil deeds.

25 He who is of a proud heart stirs up strife, but he who trusts in the Lord will be prospered.

We know that God hates pride.  We also know that Satan's fall was his pride in wanting to become higher than God.  Again, we also know that a prideful person thinks of himself better than others.  It's no wonder God hates pride.  A proud person is continuously causing problems, having at its root attention, advancing himself, only to please himself, having preeminence over others.

  • Everywhere he turns, he is jealous is someone has something better, does something better, or is recognized by people over himself. As such, a prideful person will always be in conflict with other people, not content in his lot in life.

The one who trusts in the Lord, as is contrast to the prideful person, however, will humble himself before God, trusting in Him, will receive God's many blessings.  In all His blessings, the humble man will prosper in all he does.

26 He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, but whoever walks wisely will be delivered.

Where we put our trust in is critical to our lives.  A fool will put his trust in his own self, thus will prove themselves to be a fool.  He will either fail again and again, or have to lie again and again to attempt to show himself as having wisdom.  To trust our own heart is nothing but folly and only fools follow their own folly. And of course, Satan is at the core of anything that would be contrary to the will of God.

Proverbs 3:5-6 tells it perfectly where we are to trust in the Lord and lean not on our own understanding.  Then in all our ways acknowledge the Lord, for it is He who directs our path. That's using the wisdom of God.

27 He who gives to the poor will not lack, but he who hides his eyes will have many curses.

How many times have we hid our eyes from the poor thinking if we don't see it, it doesn't exist - at least in our world.  That, however, is not reality.  In fact, God is telling us here that we will be cursed - and that will happen simply because we ignore the poverty of others.

  • We are called to give to the poor, and when we turn our face from them, we are disobeying God.  And when we disobey God, the Lord removes His hand of blessings upon us - even to the point of when we travel without the Lord taking care of us, we are living life on our own.  That itself brings on many curses without us even realizing it.
  • When we are obedient to the Lord, however, in giving to the poor, God will make sure that we do not lack.  In fact, He pours out His blessings upon us.
  • So then, who in their right mind would want to take away the blessings that God provides for us.
  • So, as God leads, let's give to the poor, by simply leaning on the Lord what to give, how to give, and who to give  to.

Just as Jesus told His disciples - "we will always have the poor among us," make sure who you give to is directed by the Lord.  Let Him be your guide.  You can never go wrong here.

28 When the wicked arise, men hide themselves; but when they perish, the righteous increase.

When wicked authority reigns in power, the people lack in their freedom, often hiding themselves away from them.  God can't pour out His blessings upon the people when wicked people rule over the people.  Even though He pours out His love on His own people, the masses of people get hurt when wicked people rule.

When they die or get out of office, however, and righteous people come into power, the people rejoice - for peace will come upon a nation where God is their God.  Righteousness will prevail and grow in a land where righteousness reigns.

Right now, we have wicked power over our nation, and we have seen the spread of wicked sweep across our land in ways where we could not have imagines ten years ago.  Even laws are being enacted to protect evil, and we, as God's people will be protected by God, but the masses of people are under a curse because of its leaders.

  • All this to say is it is so critical that we pray for our nation everyday.  God wants to bring His peace back to our country.
  • 2 Chron. 7:14 gives God's direction on how to pray for our country when it has turned to the evil ways of Satan.
  • 2 Chron 7: 14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

So then, I would like to end today by praying a prayer that Pastor Joe Wright prayed before the Kansas State Legislature way back on January 1996.

Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask Your forgiveness and to seek Your direction and guidance.  We know Your word says, "Woe to those who call evil good but this is exactly what we have done.  We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and inverted our values.

We confess that we have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your word in the name of moral pluralism.'  We have worshiped other gods and called it multiculturalism.  We have endorsed perversion and called it an alternative lifestyle.  We have explited the poor and called it a lottery.  We have neglected the needy and called it self-preservaion.  We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare.  In the name of choice, we have killed our unborn.  In the name of right to life, we have killed abortionists.

We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building esteem.  We have abused power and called it political savvy.  We've coveted our neighbors' possessions and called it taxes.  We've polluted the air with profanity and prornograophy and called it "freedom of Expression."  We've ridiculed the time-honored value of our forefathers and called it enlightement.  Search us, oh God, and know our hearts today.  Try us, and show us any wicked in us.  Cleanse us from every sin and set us free.

Guide and bless these men and women who have been sent here by the people of the United States of America (Kansas) and who have been ordained by You to govern the great county of our states.  Grant them Your wisdom to rule, and may their decisions direct us to the center of your will.  I ask it in the name of your Son, the living Savior, Jesus Christ.  Amen
